When Jorgina was out of work, she was desperate to find any job she could that would support her and her children. After being supported by her JETS Employment Advisor, Maura, Jorgina is now back working and busier than ever!
“I quit work when I got pregnant and moved from Manchester to Chester. My relationship with my partner didn’t work out and so I was left to raise my children by myself in a place where I didn’t know anyone. I had no family or friends around me and no income to support my children.
“I started hosting students in my home which was great for a while, until COVID-19 happened, and I could no longer do it. I didn’t want to receive benefits, as I’d always worked ever since I was 15, but I signed on for Universal Credit in 2019.
“I joined the JETS scheme in February 2021 where I was referred to Maura. She was so good and really made me feel like I wasn’t alone. We had check-ins every two weeks, but she was always there whenever I needed her.
“She helped me to build my CV and apply for so many jobs. She was so supportive of my situation and reassured me that everything would be ok when I was stressed about not getting any responses.
“I was open to any kind of job and I would have taken anything that was suitable. Maura opened my eyes to a lot of things that I could do. I told her about the cake decorating that I did for my local school, and she really encouraged me to set that up as my own business. She helped me to set up an Instagram page and even offered to fund a new oven for me through the JETS funding.
“Now, I do a bit of everything to bring money in. I’m a bus driver at my local depot, a quality controller for jewellery, I’m running my cake business, gardening for a local landscaper, and renovating my own house- as well as being a single mum!
“My life is so busy now, but Maura always checks in on me to make sure that I’m taking time out for myself which is really nice. Going forward, I want to try and push my cake business further and also get back to taxi driving, as I have my taxi badge, however I need the money for a new car.
“I’d recommend the JETS programme to anyone; just be open and try anything.”
