Loss of direction
At 38 years old, low skilled and long-term unemployed, Michael thought his chances of finding a job were limited. Michael then joined the Work and Health Programme in October 2020. He faced depression and anxiety, a lack of confidence and a lack of recent work history.
Michael had recently come out of a rehabilitation centre for addiction issues. He wanted to stay clean and could see that joining the programme could be a way of keeping him focused. Michael has children he needs to support and so was very keen to secure a job but had no real direction.
Standing out from the crowd
“My Employment Coach Gemma supported me to explore suitable job roles. She found vacancies directly with employers that I couldn’t find on Indeed, so I didn’t need to compete with dozens of more skilled and more employable people than me. Gemma tailored my CV to these specific job roles by emphasising my transferable skills; and then we had lots of practice with interview scenarios. We talked about how to make a health disclosure as I felt the employer could support me if he understood my background, although I didn’t want to put them off.”
Michael registered with agencies and they targeted their calls to smaller companies near to where Michael lives, so that travel wouldn’t be an issue. Gemma made contact with Metabo who were happy to interview Michael for a warehouse position with them on a temporary basis to see how things work out.
A turning point in his life
Seetec Pluss provided Michael with interview clothes and he turned up an hour early for his interview, he was so keen, and the interviewer saw him early. They were so impressed with Michael that they offered him the job on the spot and he started two days later! The team purchased work clothes and safety boots for Michael the day after the interview, so he was well prepared and he has started the paid employment with full time hours.
“The Work and Health Programme has been very helpful to me. Gemma has been very supportive and going back to work has been the best thing that has happened to me in a long time, I couldn’t have done it without her.”
