At 58, Martin was supported into a completely new career and is now training to become a self- employed painter and decorator.
Martin called the National Careers Service as he was at a difficult cross roads in his career, having spent 30 years in one sector. Looking for a new direction, his adviser Viv enabled him to recognise new opportunities that would make great next steps. Together they began to find a clear path and Martin realised he wanted to work for himself.
Martin’s story:
“After over 30 years in sales I decided I wanted to change careers but wasn’t sure which direction to move in.
Viv is an exceptionally good listener, who I felt really wanted to get to the root of what I was aiming to do with the rest of my working life. We had a very thought provoking conversation which made me think in particular, about a career in painting and decorating. She took the time to rewrite my CV as we were talking and made it hugely more relevant and easier to read for prospective employers.
I have enrolled in a condensed NVQ2 course in painting and decorating and I would not have done this without Viv’s guidance.
Once I have achieved my qualification I can see a clear route to going into my own business using my many contacts and sales skills. My long term goal is to take on apprentices and to grow and expand. I will also be taking time out to learn new skills such as plastering on the way.
Speaking to Viv, has given me a new purpose and sense of direction. I was feeling completely rudderless. I now have a real sense of direction. I needed support in finding a suitable training course which Viv helped with.
I told a friend about all the help National Careers Service gave me and he will be in touch! I would say there is nothing to be nervous about and not to be afraid to reach out for help”
Viv said:
“I am really pleased that I was able to support Martin with his next career opportunity. What he has done takes real courage”
