This person has decided they want to stay anonymous for this story, so we will call them Sam

After going through several traumatic events in their life, Sam decided to turn to the National Careers Service for some support. “I could never consider a career until I met you,” they told us.

Sam came to Maggie, one of our South West careers advisers, with an idea of the path they wanted to take, but it was their first appointment that gave them their clear direction.

Turning point

“I had an appointment face-to-face with you. You patiently listened and then came up with a thorough plan of potential courses and short and long-term goals.

“This appointment was the turning point in my life,” says Sam.

“I met Sam a few years ago” Maggie added,” and they were unsure of which direction to go, but wanted to help people and had the motivation and transferable skills to achieve this.” a careers adviser maggie

After taking Maggie’s advice, Sam is now a qualified counsellor and is in their final year of a BSc in Psychology at the Open University.

Additionally, they are now in a senior position within a company, leading and supporting groups and individuals who have experienced trauma.

Maggie isn’t surprised Sam is doing so well; “Sam has seized opportunities, achieved goals and is now in a position where they can support vulnerable individuals to become empowered, motivated and have the tools to help them progress.”

Sam wanted to say, “I cannot tell you how much your advice and support at that time has helped me. Thank you so very much!”

Everyone at the National Careers Service, wishes Sam the best of luck for the future, even though we don’t think they will need it.
